What is ASIL?
ASIL stands for Automotive Safety Integrity Level, a risk classification system defined by the ISO 26262 standard for the functional safety of road vehicles. ASIL is used to assess the risk associated with potential hazards caused by malfunctioning electronic and software-based systems in vehicles. The standard defines four ASIL levels: A, B, C, and D, with ASIL D representing the highest level of risk and requiring the most stringent safety measures.
The determination of ASIL is based on three factors: severity (potential harm), exposure (frequency of the operational situation), and controllability (ability of the driver to avoid harm). Higher ASIL levels require more rigorous development processes, validation, and verification activities to ensure that safety goals are met. ASIL is foundational in automotive development, guiding both product design and process requirements to minimize risks and ensure compliance with industry safety standards.
